The Village of Wilmette (pop. 27,100), which is located approximately 15 miles north of downtown Chicago, has the only harbor on the North Shore. The Village extends about five miles west from Lake Michigan. Residents take enormous pride in their schools and cultural and recreational activities for their children. In 2007, Business Week ranked Wilmette as the seventh best place in the United States to raise children. Wilmette has a well-developed urban forest and attained “Tree City” status in 1983. Village parkways boast more than 18,000 trees comprising 150+ species.
