Oakland is the third largest city in the San Francisco Bay area, the county seat, a major West Coast port city, and the trade center for the Bay Area. It is situated six miles east of San Francisco, directly across the Bay. Oakland is known for its sustainability practices, political activism, and professional sports franchises (it has teams in basketball, baseball, and football). In addition, Oakland is one of the most ethnically diverse major cities in the country. In 2013, Art Place America ranked Oakland as one of America’s top 12 arts communities, recognizing Downtown, Chinatown, Old Oakland, and Jack London Square as communities “that have most successfully combined art, artists and venues for creativity and expression with independent businesses, retail shops and restaurants, and a walkable lifestyle to make vibrant neighborhoods.”
