Foster City is located 22 miles south of San Francisco. It is a planned community on a man-made series of islands with over 16 miles of navigable canals weaving through it. Approximately 38% of the city’s residences are single-family detached homes; 20% are single-family attached; and 40% are apartments or condominiums. There are 14 different neighborhoods (almost each with a mix of housing) and eight retail shopping centers in the city. In 2009, Forbes ranked Foster City #10 on their list of America’s Top 25 Towns to Live Well. The two largest employers are Gilead Science, a biotech firm (2,200 employees), and Visa (1,400 employees). Both have their corporate headquarters in Foster City.
