Welcome to Berkeley

Berkeley is located on the east shore of San Francisco Bay and is the site of the oldest (1873) campus in the University of California system – the University of California, Berkeley. It is one of the most politically liberal cities in the United States. In the 1960s, Berkeley became a flashpoint for the political and social issues that then defined America; in 1964, it was the birthplace of The Free Speech Movement. Today, Berkeley is consummately Californian in setting, international in perspective, and filled with superb theaters, restaurants and shops. Although free speech and flower power are forever in the city’s “DNA,” Berkeley has evolved into a culinary and cultural destination with a “green” soul. With some 14,000 employees, the University is the city’s largest employer.
