Atherton (approx. pop. 7,000) is one of the wealthiest cities in the United States. In 2013, Forbes magazine ranked it as the most expensive zip code in the country. It lies two miles southeast of Redwood City, 18 miles northwest of San Jose and 35 miles south of San Francisco.Atherton has numerous community organizations – a heritage association, an arts committee, a tree committee, the Friends of the Atherton Community Library, the Holbrook-Palmer Park Foundation, the Atherton Dames, the Police Task force, and the Atherton Civic Interest League. The private Menlo Circus Club, with stables and a riding ring, is located within the town. Atherton’s six square miles are covered with native live oaks, white oaks, bays, redwoods, cedars, pines, and other ornamental trees.
