Welcome to Alexandria
Old Town Alexandria is one of the most popular neighborhoods in the entire Washington, D.C. area, in no small part because of its beautifully preserved 18th- and 19th-century buildings, rich Colonial-era heritage, world-class shopping and dining, and waterfront location on the western bank of the Potomac River. The historic center of the City of Alexandria (155,810 pop.), Old Town was founded in 1749 and was home to George Washington. Located about seven miles south of D.C., its heart and soul is the bustling King Street, a walkable mile recognized as one of the “Great Streets” of America. Cultural events are plentiful year round, as are festivals and celebrations that bring residents and visitors alike to Old Town to enjoy the neighborhood’s unique and charming ambiance.
