FIRST REAL JOB
Sales and Catering Assistant at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel
MOST RECENT JOB BEFORE SUBURBAN JUNGLE
“Before becoming a SAHM, I was an Account Director for Starwood Hotels, handling international corporate clients coming to our NYC hotels to host their events.”
WHAT SHE APPLIES FROM HER PREVIOUS CAREER TO HER WORK WITH SUBURBAN JUNGLE
“Throughout my career with Starwood, I managed client relationships, negotiated major contracts and had to understand the needs of my clients and the purpose of their events and help find them the most appropriate location for their event. I have transitioned from putting heads in beds and planning events to helping clients find their ideal town and transition to life in the suburbs.
My experience with working with clients around the world and often planning things remotely has been invaluable in transitioning to this role as so much of what we do is on the phone and online and building the trust and relationships virtually can be a challenge, but one I have great experience with.”
WHAT SHE LOVES MOST ABOUT WORKING AT SUBURBAN JUNGLE
“Our business model is amazing! Whether you grew up in the area and have a sense of which direction you want to go or are brand new to the ‘burbs, everyone could use some guidance and unbiased direction when planning a move and finding the right town. We have an amazing team, who really understands the needs of young families, and we help simplify the process. I also love learning about all the fantastic options to live in the tristate area. We are really fortunate to live in a place that has so many diverse, vibrant and very different types of communities, there really is something for everyone.”
WHAT SHE LOVES MOST ABOUT WORKING WITH SUBURBAN JUNGLE FAMILIES
“I love getting to know my clients on a personal level and becoming more than just their strategist but also a confidant and friend. One of the most rewarding parts of my job is hearing from clients that if it wasn’t for our service they never would have found THEIR town. There is nothing better than having a client find that ‘hidden gem’ and a place they can call home when they move, and realizing that they never thought they would be so happy after moving out of the city.”
ABOUT HER FAMILY
“My husband, Dori, works in Private Equity and travels weekly based on his current portfolio deal. We have three kids — Makayla is 8 ½ and entering 4th grade, Aiden is turning 7 and going into 1st grade, and Ava is 3 and will be in a 3’s program at a local preschool. During the weekend when we are not spending our time on the various sports fields, hockey rinks (I am a hockey mom) and kids activities, we love going to the beaches in town, enjoying local restaurants and hanging out with our family and friends. We also love to travel and spend many weekends at our home in the Berkshires, enjoying the lake in the summer and skiing in the winter. “
WHERE SHE MOVED FROM
Immediately prior to settling in Westport, the family lived in Westchester. Before that, they called the Upper West Side of Manhattan home. “I grew up in the mid-west and then moved to the suburbs of Boston, before moving to DC for college”, Maya says, “while Dori grew up in Israel and then Toronto and moved to the US when we go married 15 years ago. After we got married we spent a few years in Boston before moving to NYC. We loved living on the UWS, but moved to Westchester when our daughter was a year old and a few years later to Westport, where we currently live.”
WHERE SHE CALLS HOME
WHEN IT ALL HAPPENED
The family moved in late 2009 when their daughter was one-year-old.
WHY SHE CHOSE WESTPORT
“We moved from the Manhattan to lower Westchester for a few years and when close proximity to the city was no longer as important to us decided to make a bigger move to Westport — and it was the perfect decision for our family. Westport has one of the top school districts in Connecticut, along with a creative, welcoming, friendly community. And being a beach town, Westport definitely has more of a laid back vibe and a New England mentality, which we LOVE.
We also love the beauty of the town. It’s great for young families and has all of the amenities you could want with low property taxes — amazing! Walking along Compo Beach and spending warm evenings at the beach and playground with our friends was ultimately what won us over and made us realize what a special place we live in.”
WHAT SHE’D TELL CITY FAMILIES CONSIDERING MAKING A MOVE
“Really get to know the personality of the town and if you can see yourself living there long-term. Don’t look for a place that addresses your short term needs, but rather a place you can plant your roots as your family grows, look for a place with like minded people, where you can create that village.”
WHY SHE WORKS FOR SUBURBAN JUNGLE
“When we moved out of the city, we had no idea where to look — we were one of the first of our friends to move and not from the area so everything was new to us. Without direction we didn’t know where to turn or even which agent to use. I wish Suburban Jungle was around when we moved to help guide us in our search!
Shortly after we moved, a friend introduced me to Ali Bernstein, the founder of Suburban Jungle. Brilliant was what I thought of the company — again, I just wish it was around when we made our move! Now, I love helping young families begin their search and I love helping them understand how the personality of a town is just as important as the house, if not more.”
